A fire department live-in is an individual that receives room & board from a fire department in exchange for them staffing the apparatus and managing in-station responsibilities. The concept goes much deeper than that though, and the benefits to both the firefighter and the fire department are immeasurable.

The greatest benefit to departments is staffing. Depending on the department, that staffing can be anything from a few extra back step fire fighters, to another driver and/or officer. Furthermore, the service to the community will be greatly improved by a live-in program and the advantages of that are unlimited.
